Basics of Bedroom Furniture and Scale: Where to Start

The best way to create a welcoming sleep space in your home is to invest in bedroom furniture that is well-designed, beautiful, and comfortable. Your bedroom should be a haven from the worries of the day and help you recharge for the new day ahead. Luckily, the right bedroom furniture can make all the difference.

Bedroom Basics

The key component and focal point of any bedroom furniture suite is the bed itself. First of all, you should decide which mattress size will best fit your needs. The size of the room and the number of sleepers that will occupy the bed are important considerations. Guest bedrooms are often outfitted with futons, sofa beds, or hideaway Murphy style beds. When measuring a room for the proper bed size, be sure to allow for at least two feet of open space around each bed.

Modern mattresses have popular options such as pillow-toppers, air chambers, memory foam, and adjustability features. Common bed sizes include:

  • Twin or single - 39 in × 75 in
  • Twin extra long - 39 in × 80 in
  • Double or full - 54 in × 75 in
  • Queen - 60 in × 80 in
  • California queen - 60 in × 84 in
  • King - 76 in × 80 in
  • California king - 72 in × 84 in

Once the mattress size is selected, you can now check out the countless options for displaying and supporting the mattress. Whether you prefer a decorative or no-frills bed frame, most are constructed from wood and metal components. A basic utilitarian metal bed frame provides support for the mattress and box spring, but remains hidden for the most part. Another similar option is the platform bed in which the mattress rests directly on an elevated solid surface without a box spring. Decorative bed frame options include iron beds, brass beds, four poster beds, sleigh beds, and captain beds.

Bedroom Extras

The next step is to round out your sleeping quarters by adding a few essential pieces of bedroom furniture. Storage space for clothing and other daily items is a top concern in nearly all bedrooms. Even though many newer homes have walk-in and built-in closets, there may still be a need to store clothes and linens in a free-standing dresser, wardrobe, chest of drawers, or bureau. Armoires are also great for organizing attire - especially in older homes without closets - but they are now more commonly used to house secondary television sets.

The addition of one or two nightstands will provide even more storage and improve the functionality of the space. Since they are placed by the bed, nightstands are the perfect spot for convenience items such as a tissue box, water carafe, or your favorite novel. A well-appointed nightstand should also include a bedside lamp which allows for adjustable reading light.

If space allows, include luxurious bedroom furniture like a chaise lounge, armchair, loveseat, settee, or vanity. Also called a dressing table or makeup table, a vanity is a low desk-like table featuring an attached mirror and a small bench or chair. Vanities add glamour to the bedroom and provide an intimate space for the lady of the house to apply makeup or style her hair.

Children and teens may have special requirements when it comes to bedroom furniture. Space saving ideas like bunk beds and daybeds are also fun for kids. Bunk beds or loft beds feature stacked or elevated mattresses which utilize vertical space in a room. A Daybeds functions as a casual sofa during the day and a twin bed at nighttime. Sometimes, a trundle bed is kept under a daybed frame, so that it can be easily rolled out for a sibling or friend. Other considerations include toy storage and a desk for schoolwork.
